Liam Williams has been named Mercedes-Benz WRPA Players’ Player of the Season at the WRPA Awards Dinner 2014.
The Scarlets full-back picked up his award at the Ceremony in Cardiff’s City Hall on Wednesday evening. Williams has had a successful season both for the Scarlets and Wales and was named Man of the Match in Wales’ record 51-3 win over Scotland in the 2014 Six Nations.
On winning his award he said: “It’s an honour to receive this award, especially with it being voted for by the players. I’ve really enjoyed my rugby this year and am looking forward to next season already”
Fellow Scarlet, Gareth Davies, picked up the award for Young Player of the Season, sponsored by Essentially Group. The 23 year old was the top try-scorer in this season's Pro12 and has also been named in RaboDirect PRO12's Dream Team alongside Liam Williams.
All nominees in the Young Player category were from the Scarlets region this year, with Liam Williams and Samson Lee also being nominated.
Both the Players’ Player and Young Player of the season awards were voted for by WRPA members.
Other awards on the night included Try of the Season sponsored by Tiger Tiger Cardiff – won by Matthew Morgan (Ospreys) for his fantastic try against Edinburgh earlier in the season. His award made it the third year running for the Ospreys in this category following on from Ryan Bevington (2013) and Hanno Dirksen (2012).
Sevens Player of the Season, a new award last year, was won by James Davies. Fellow nominees in this category were last year’s winner Lee Williams and Sam Cross.
This year also saw three players voted into the Hall of Fame, Robert Sidoli (Dragons), Matthew Rees (Blues) and Duncan Jones (Ospreys) – recognising their incredible achievements to date. These players were voted into the Hall of Fame by WRPA members who were asked to vote for players who had made a significant contribution to Welsh Rugby since the WRPA’s inception in 2003.
The evening, hosted by BBC Wales Scrum V’s Phil Steele, was a great success raising a significant sum of money for the WRPA Benevolent Trust – set up to support current and former players in times of serious injury, illness or hardship.
